"I am an athlete. I live for discomfort. My body is not the goal, but a direct result of blood, sweat and tears. It is in our primal genetics to move, push and fight for survival. My shell is merely a direct result of the respect for the vehicle I've been blessed with, my love of feeling the ground beneath my feet, the wind against my face and the fight against the weight attempting to hold my vehicle down. I am a machine." ~Nichole Ohrablo

Inline Speed Skater
Who loves to ROLL!
About Me?
Inline Speed Skater
Started my inline career by chance. On a very cold and dreary February, 2009, I decided I had to go somewhere warm. Searched the Internet and stumbled across an inline competition in Tampa, Florida. With less than a month to go, I bought a pair of skates and a ticket to Florida. And I have been skating ever since! I am presently on what I think is the most supportive and best pro inline speed skating team "Asphalt Beach" with sponsors from Bell Helmets, K2, OS Nutrition and Smith Optics. If you look at my list of accomplishments, my skating career has come a long way in a very short time. I believe it is because of the support of my family, friends, co-workers and teammates. I love the sport and I have the moxie to do my best. I am also a member of Sk8skool, coached by Sutton Atkins, a national inline champion and international coach. His elite team is based out of Denmark. Since receiving expert advice and coaching, my performance has improved and continues to move in the right direction. The personal support I receive has been crucial to my transformation from a recreational skater into a competitive speed skater. Part of my training includes strength training. On the advice of my coach I signed up with Crossfit Fredericton in December, 2009. This gym is unlike any other gym I have attended. The owners, both nationally-ranked power lifters, have developed a gym atmosphere that is motivating and positive. I look forward to the excruciating workouts! In one year my strength doubled and I look forward to getting stronger with their help. I have always been interested in Roller Derby I had the opportunity to become a member of the Capital City Rollers in 2011, a roller derby league that was created in August, 2010. Along with being a skater, I co-coach the travel team and draft league, providing skating skills and fitness programs. This was a very challenging endeavour especially since I had not skated on quads or very familiar with roller derby.... but I learned fast!! Within three weeks of being a member I was one of the head coaches. I decided my name would be Hammer Slammer. Hammer was my trigger word that I would use in inline speed skating when I wanted to attack, so I thought it was fitting. #300 because it is one of my favourite movies. In 2013, I had moved to be closer to the Bay of Fundy and became a member of the Fog City Rollers and became a member of the travel team Shipyard Sirens. The time spent with this team has been amazing. They have gone all the way to Nationals and have recently gotten WFTDA apprentice status. Here are the stats for this team. http://flattrackstats.com/teams/9841 In my younger years, I was a short track speed skater as well as competitive road racing cyclist, a member of numerous provincial teams and won several national and North American medals. I am also the only Canadian to attend four Canada Games and I am a bronze medalist. I also have Bachelor of Physical Education from the University of New Brunswick and a Diploma in Massage Therapy from the Canadian College of Massage and Hydrotherapy. In my professional career, I have owned two very successful business that I sold. One year out of college I founded the Advanced Therapeutic Treatment Center and within two years had seven full time massage therapists working in the clinic. In 2001, I founded the Atlantic College of Therapeutic Massage. This college is well respected across Canada and has a transfer agreement with the University of New Brunswick. I have decided to take the 2012 and 2013 inline speed skating season off and focus on roller derby. I am very excited about this new venture and hope to excel in this sport. Stay tuned! My home is in Beaver Harbour, New Brunswick, Canada. I am a regular contributor to the Tip of the Week on InlinePlanet.com. Click to enlarge photos. TEAM SPONSOR ASPHALT BEACH

Becoming a full time athlete
has its challenges. To be able to
effectively train, travel and compete, I have had to limit my income, teaching
only one day per week. . Any money
spent is decided on how it will contribute to my skating. The preparation and balance of my
budget is in conjunction of how it will affect me as an athlete.
Here are some of the top priority items that are essential: 1. Fuel. Food is my fuel. Athletes require the right combination of fuels to keep performing at peak efficiency. Nothing fancy, but a lot of it. 2. Training venues. The gym where I train, indoor skating facilities and traveling across the province to find good roads, paths and paved surfaces to skate on. On average I drive 600 km a week to find appropriate surfaces to skate on. 3. Coaching. Because the closest inline speed skating club is 900km’s from my home, I have hired a private “distance” coach. Having a good coach that can adapt to this type of coaching is important. Since he in unable attend my training sessions, much time is spent on video conferencing, preparing video recordings of my skating and countless hours reviewing it. 4. Travel. I do not take vacations. All of my travel is for training camps and competitions. Most of my events take place in the United States. So that means trying to find the most cost efficient way to get there. Usually the cheapest way is the most inconvenient way to travel and takes a toll on my preparation for events. Last year, I would normally drive three hours, stay overnight in a hotel, hop on a plane with multiple connections, get to the venue, find transportation to and from a hotel near the venue and then return home again, usually omitting the hotel when I return and choosing to sleep in my car. 5. Equipment. The most expensive part of skating. It doesn’t matter if I am training or competing, my equipment has to be the same. Each time I train, I need the “feel” of my equipment to be as consistent and precise as it would be in competition. Always searching for the best set-up for the surface I am skating on. For the many different types of skating surfaces is a specialized wheel to match it. Wheels will show wear after four to five times of use, if used beyond that, it decreases the speed which in return creates improper technique. Last year I modestly skated through 15 pairs of wheels. Most of which I used more than 5 times. On average a set of wheels cost $140.00 (when you factor in taxes and shipping). There is much more than wheels to meet my equipment needs. I also have to purchase a constant supply of bearings, lubricants and cleaners, spacers, bolts, laces, helmet, protective gear and medical/first aid supplies. |
